Michelle Yeoh had a golden night at the 2023 Oscars.
Shortly before winning Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her work in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the 60-year-old reflected on her milestone career with Live From E!'s Laverne Cox on the March 12 red carpet.
"I'm feeling really happy," she said. "I'm feeling at peace. We got here. Who would've ever imagined that this little movie that had a big heart came all the way to the Oscars? So I'm happy."
For the celebration, Michelle wore a white Christian Dior Couture design. "I'm in a cloud," she shared of the look. "I'm just in a cloud of happiness."
With her win, Michelle became the first Asian-identifying woman to receive the Best Actress trophy at the Oscars. Others nominated in the category included Cate Blanchett for Tár, Ana de Armas for Blonde, Andrea Riseborough for To Leslie and Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans. (See the full winners list here.)
Michelle is now only the second woman of color to take home the Best Actress statue. In 2001, Halle Berry was awarded Best Actress for her work in Monster's Ball.
Prior to her win, Michelle had already become an Oscar history-maker, as she is the first Asian-identifying woman to be nominated in that category. Merle Oberon, whose mom was reportedly part Sri Lankan, is considered by some to be the first Asian nominee for best actress at the Oscars, per The Hollywood Reporter. However, Merle wasn't publicly open about her ancestry.
Michelle has racked up quite a few awards for Everything Everywhere All At Once, including the 2023 Golden Globe award for Best Actress in Musical or Comedy.
At the time, Michelle exclusively spoke with Laverne on the Golden Globes red carpet about the magic behind Everything Everywhere All at Once, noting that the film's directors, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, are incredibly special to work with.
"They are insanely talented. They're goofy. They're funny. They're smart," she noted. "But I think at the core of it is a beating heart. It's of love. We have to show each other kindness and compassion and never give up."
