Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix's family appears to be expanding.
The "Women Talking" star attended the premiere of "La Cocina" at the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany on Friday and was photographed cradling an apparent baby bump, suggesting she and Phoenix are expecting another child together.
USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Mara and Phoenix. This would be the second child for Mara and Phoenix, who welcomed a baby boy in 2020: River, who was named after Phoenix's late brother, River Phoenix.
Speaking to USA TODAY in 2023, Mara recalled that when she read the script for the Oscar-winning film "Women Talking," she "had just had a baby," and the character reflected the "new place in my life" that she was in. "I was in this very blissful, madly-in-love-with-my-child, much more hopeful and positive space," Mara said.
"It was very easy to channel all of that love and empathy (into the character). It also does change everything, having a child," she added. "It was that much more painful to think about some of these situations and be able to relate to them in a different way."
Mara and Phoenix are ordinarily quite private about their relationship.
New parents Rooney Mara,Joaquin Phoenix talk baby son for the first time, address families separated at border
In 2020, they referenced their son in an article published in People magazine about children being separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.
"As new parents, it's unbearable to imagine what it would feel like to have our child taken away from us for a day, let alone years," they wrote at the time. "But that's the very situation those 545 children and their parents have been living through. As Americans, it's our responsibility to continue paying attention to the plight of these families and get answers for why they still have not been located."
In a 2021 interview with The Sunday Times, Phoenix said he "would hope" his son will follow in his footsteps by becoming a vegan but added, "I'm not going to impose my belief on my child. I don't think that’s right."
Mara and Phoenix met on the 2013 film "Her" and later worked together again on 2018's "Mary Magdalene" and "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot." The actress was in Berlin for the premiere of her latest movie "La Cocina." Phoenix, meanwhile, will be seen later this year in "Joker: Folie à Deux."
